Hawks Bow Out of US Amateur Cup with 1-0 OT loss to MD Bays
Depleted Hawks Squad Succumb in OT for the 2nd Week in a Row
The Hawks fell to the MD champions, Maryland Bays, in a Region I Amateur Cup quarterfinal fixture off a strike in OT after a scoreless tie in regulation. The win for the Bays marks the first time the Hawks have been defeated by a Maryland team in Regional Cup play since a 2-1 Amateur Cup OT loss to Allied SC in 2007. The Bays were by far the dominant team in the first half against a depleted and makeshift Hawks side that barely resembled the group that traveled up to NJ the week prior in regional Open Cup play. Injuries and absences of players were further exacerbated with the 20th minute substitution of center mid-turned center back Danny Irizarry due to a hamstring strain. A couple of defensive adjustments and stellar play by Hawks netminder Chris Fenner helped stop the gaps for the Hawks and the team was able to eventually gain some offensive momentum going into the half. The second half, the Hawks looked the stronger side and had better opportunities at goal while the Bays always were threatening on the counter. The Bays fully leveraged the 7 substitution allowance and made many changes in the second stanza. The Hawks, on the other hand, were unable to get playmaker Gui Fonseca into the match due to a misplaced player card, leaving Jose Colchao as the lone Hawks sub (65th min) in the second half and OT. In overtime, the Bays took full advantage of their fresher legs and created waves of opportunities beginning with a goal halfway through the 1st OT period off a Hawks turnover. In the second OT period, the Hawks pressed forward but the Bays remained fresher and able to control the play until the final whistle, missing several golden chances to increase their margin. With the loss, the Hawks have been eliminated in the regional stage of both National Cups and now have only WPL league play for the remainder of the season.
