Hawks Defeat Fados Conquistadores 4-1, Claim Fifth Consecutive WPL Title (Falls Church, VA - 8:30 PM - George Mason High School)
The Hawks took the pitch in their final WPL game of the season against last season's #2 side, Fados Irish Pub Conquistadores. The Hawks were able to take advantage of some fine long range bombs to win 4-1 and claim their fifth consecutive WPL title. The goal scoring started quickly, with Ryan Rich shaking his defender in the box and sliding a shot past the Fados keeper. Alex Nydal got the Hawks up 2-0 in the 30th off a fine cross from Ryan Rich which he settled and pounded into the upper 90 from 12 yards. The Hawks looked to be on for the rout when center back Alan Golden settled a pass and unleashed a bomb from 30 yards that sizzled into the upper 90 to add another impressive finish to his resume. Goal of the year candidate, no doubt. Fados brought the game one closer to make it 3-1 just after the second half kickoff and then settled down and started to control the match. The Hawks were able to withstand Fados pressure until the late stages of the match when rookie Nate Adams rifled his own blast from 20 yards that left the keeper with no chance. A strong win against an always consistent and threatening opponent. The Aegean side now sets its sights on a Terrill Cup semifinal clash with WISL upstarts, Raiders FC, a talented team that is very much on the rise and should provide a tough test. Several Hawks players also play on the Raiders, and when the teams meet on Sunday afternoon at Bretton Woods, bragging rights will be at stake!
