2003: Hawks 5 – Ferro Carril– 0
The second week of the Fall season
found the Hawks matched up against old-time foes Ferro Carril Oeste.
The last time the Hawks faced Ferro was in a Premier division match-up
in Spring of 2000, which the Hawks won 6-2. After a lackluster showing
in the opening stanza of the season against Capital Blues, the Hawks
were poised to return to their Premier form and started the game
strong. The team was able to aggressively attack and use a strong
possession game to its advantage. The scoring started in the 19th
minute, with center midfielder Mike Williams receiving a ball from
Alan Golden about 22 yards from left side of Ferro goal. A quick
push to the right set up a tremendous shot low and hard to the corner
that beat the Ferro keeper cleanly. Hawks up 1-0. Just two minutes
later, a beautiful sequence of 7 or 8 one-touch passes found Doug
Henry about 20 yards to the right of the Ferro goal for a swerving
cross to his William & Mary teammate, Alan Golden for a magnificent
deflection header with his back to the goal that left the Ferro
keeper with no chance on the play. Hawks up 2-0.
The Hawks continued to pressure
hard in the first half, and found the net again in the 35th minute
off another beautiful sequence of passing on the left side. Scottie
Hamilton, poised to crank a shot at the end of a nice one-touch
pass, deftly tapped to a streaking Marcos Araus in front of the
net, who beat the keeper to the ball and slotted it home convincely.
Hawks up 3-0 at half. Second half showed a little drop off in play
by the Hawks, but the goals came in the last 15 minutes of the game.
The 4th goal was created by forward Zeus Martin who checked back
the ball at the top of the box, laid it off with a one-time pass
to Doug Henry, who played it back to Zeus, who slotted a diagonal
ball to a streaking Alan Golden who slotted a shot low and hard
past the Ferro keeper. The last goal was created by a penetrating
through ball from Doug Henry to forward Yuri Sudhakar, who sped
past a charging keeper and slammed the final Hawks goal into the
net with authority. Hawks win 5-0.
All in all, a good showing,
though the team still has yet to fulfill its true form. The defense
played great in the absence of starters Jon Knight and Alex Peacher.
Ferro was never really able to threaten and all their shots were
long range and were snapped up by new keeper Hadley Tatem with ease.
Hadley was able to record his second straight shutout and is sure
to be a force in the WISL. The William & Mary boys collected
well-deserved game MVP and Honorable Mention today, but the victory
was truly an unselfish team effort. With the new lineup settling
in nicely, the Hawks look to continue their improvement in the next
game against Sporting FC.
