Sept. 28th,
2003: Hawks 5 – Kian FC– 0 WellGame started off strong for Hawks, but quickly
deteriorated into a wide-open affair. First Hawks goal off penalty
in 12th minute. Rest of first half hit post twice and missed many
chances, but strong possession play was lacking instead replaced
by a wide-open affair. Kian should have scored off a couple of plays
in the box, but keeper Hadley Tatem showed his mettle and snuffed
out their chances with some amazing saves. Rest of game until 65th
minute showed good chances by both teams, but no net found until
Panikos Michael, the Hawks all-time leading goalscorer visiting
from Cyprus for the weekend, was able to slot home a simple finish
after an Alan Golden shot slammed off the post onto Antonio Paz's
foot for the assist. Kian then got a redcard for a tough hit on
forward Yuri Sudhakar that had him leave the game with a concussion.
Zeus Martin scored after a nice passing sequence in the box to make
it 3-0 in the 72nd minute. Then another red card for Kian for talking
smack to the ref, and Hawks took advantage with 2 more goals. One,
a beautiful swerving free kick from 20 yards by Panikos, the last
by Zeus on another tap in goal in the box after unselfish assist
by defender Alex Peacher. Hawks win 5-0. Both Panikos and Zeus had
2 goals apiece, but Hadley gets well-deserved MVP for making some
huge saves at a key point in the match. In reality, the score does
not reflect the contest which, while won by the better team on the
day, was competitive and tight until the second goal by the Hawks.
