2003: Hawks 3 – Mavericks – 2 Hawks howed up missing 5 regulars, but were still
able to field a good squad. A game Mavericks side proved to be strongest
Hawks had faced yet this season. Hawks started game well, but Mavericks
scored off a blatant offsides in the 10th minute. Mavericks player
had breakaway and shot, ball was deflected to side by keeper Hadley
Tatem. Another Maverick got to ball and hit a shot, partially blocked
by a defending Hawk. The ball went straight to a Mavericks player
almost on the goalline and he taps it in - blatant offsides. Mavericks
up 1-0. First Hawks score came from Richard
Shaheen on left side collecting rebound from tremendous midfield
strike by center midfielder Mike Williams. Goal was a well-placed
shot low and hard to far post. Halftime score 1-1. Hawks score second
goal in 55th off a composed placement shot by Alan Golden from the
left side. Hawks up 2-1. Mavericks have a great chance snuffed by
keeper Hadley Tatem ~70th minute. Soon after Alan Golden receives
the ball running at the edge of the box, runs around 2 defenders
and instead of chipping decides to come in and crank a sweet laser
to the far side netting - very classy finish. Hawks well in command
until referee rewards Mavericks with a dubious penalty kick towards
end of game - it was a joke really. Mavericks score and that's how
it ended. Nothing against Mavericks, they have a talented side and
were able to threaten with some solid chances, but both of their
actual goals should not have counted. --
