Oct. 19th,
2003: Hawks 3 – La Tocadita – 0 Hawks were missing 6 or 7 regulars but again
managed to field a solid squad. The game was fairly one- sided,
with only poor finishing by the Hawks and an incredible performance
by La Tocadita's keeper the limiting factors on a more pronounced
final tally. After missing a mind-boggling amount of chances in
the first half, the Hawks finally found net in the 35th minute with
Alan Golden finding Rich Nyren in the box for a nice placement shot
to the right corner, low and hard. Halftime Hawks up 1-0. Second
goal came at 58th with Doug Henry receiving the ball from Zeus Martin
at the top of the box, weaving his way through two defenders and
the keeper for a tap in at the goaline. Last goal scored on a tap-in
by Rich Nyren after Zeus Martin broke down the entire defense and
unselfishly passed to the wide open man. Hawks played a great game,
with nice passing and strong possesion in their favor; however,
the sheer number of missed opportunities was somewhat troubling.
Part of the reason had to do with La Tocadita's keeper, who - as
stated before, made some incredible saves to keep the score respectable.
Congrats to both squads for a very clean game with no cards. Rich
Nyren gets MVP for the two goals and Zeus Martin gets the honorable
mention for 2 assists. The Hawks eagerly anticipate next week's
match up with the Emerald Knights to avenge a 2- 0 loss in the Premier
league in Fall of 2002, a game where Hawks were down 2 men for much
of the game. --
