October 17th,
2004: Hawks 2 – Village Settlements – 3
The Hawks took the pitch vs
a Village Settlements team coming off a bye week. The Hawks were
unable to build on their commanding performance vs perennial league
powerhouse Dynamos a fortnight before and fell to the African squad
3-2.
The Hawks scored first in the
20th minute when striker Craig Cochran robbed a defender in the
box and somehow managed to slam a shot low and hard to the far post
off a very difficult angle. Village was quick to answer by exploiting
a flat Hawk back line to send a long ball onto the feet of a streaking
forward who was able to win his battle with the Hawks center back
and slot a shot past keeper Anthony Peters and into the goal in
the 25th minute.
The game continued in a seesaw
manner the rest of the first half until Village was able to strike
again off a quick counter and score in the 40th minute. Halftime
score, Hawks 1- Village Settlements - 2. The second half saw the
Hawks pressing and finding many opportunities to score, but unable
find the back of the net. Another misplay by the Hawks in front
of the box allowed Village to extend their lead to 2 goals in the
70th minute. The rest of the game was all pressure by the Hawks.
Alan Golden was able to beat three Village players to the line and
deliver a driven cross to far side of the Village box, where Justin
Bodiya ran onto to deliver a crushing volley into the net in the
78th minute. The Hawks pressed hard for the equalizer but were unable
to find the net. That's how it ended. Tough luck, lots of work on
finishing needed.
