2005: Hawks - 0, Quilmes - 1
The Hawks opened their Fall 2005 campaign on a Sunny afternoon
at the Maryland Soccerplex versus Argentine side Quilmes. The
departure of seven teammates over the offseason for a variety
of reasons, and the recent arrival of seven new players to fill
their shoes left Hawks management interested in seeing how the
team would respond against a decent team to open up the season.
Forwards David Ambush and Titou Fierro, midfielders Watson Vaughan-Prather
and Emerson Sykes, and defenders Mfundo Hlatshwayo and Jean-Marc
McClean were all making their debuts for the Hawks on the day.
The occasion also marked the first game with new uniforms provided
by player/manager Jonathan Knight. The Hawks had embarassed
Quilmes 4-1 in the previous meeting between the two sides, and
the Argentines were eager to show the Hawks a better game.
To the game, the Hawks quickly established a superior passing
game, but clearly were having trouble absorbing the new talent.
It was clear that the touches and potential were there, but the
squad had an uncharacterisitic tough time stringing together consecutive
passes. A tendency to play too direct, too early provided Quilmes
with ample opportunities for the counter attack. Regardless, the
Hawks were clearly the more polished side, and Quilmes could count
themselves lucky to be tied up at the half with no goals for either
team.
In the second half, uncharacteristic
poor finishing kept Quilmes in the match. While again the Hawks
had the better of the play,
the Hawks defense looked shaky at times and Quilmes also missed
some golden opportunities to take the lead. It was the kind of
game where Quilmes was able to hang around, and then in the 75th
minutes, they took the lead off a defensive error allowed a cross
to penetrate the Hawks box. In the ensuing melee, the ball squirted
out to an opportunistic Quilmes forward who tapped in the goal
for the first tally of the match. Quilmes up 1-0. Despite a flurry
of opportunities in the last minutes of the game, the Hawks could
not muster the equalizer and ended their first game of the season
with a loss. Alan Golden gets the nod as man of the match with
his deadly free kicks and Kevin Koitz gets kudos for his precision
passing and havoc on the wings all day long. Tre Watson gets props
for displaying some fantastic distribution that bodes well for
the Hawks this season. With a plethora of center midfield options,
the Hawks will look to find the right formula in the coming weeks
as the team goes into a bye week looking to build the necessary
chemistry for success.
