2005: Hawks 7 – Village Settlements - 1
The opening game
of the 2005 Spring season found the Hawks blessed with unbelievable
blue skys, radiant sun and temparatures of 70 degrees. The Hawks
were eager to open up their season campaign against league rival
Village Settlements. The Hawks were looking to avenge last season's
poor 3-2 loss at the hands of Village and eager to showcase
some of the newfound talent on the side. In an up-and-down game
that had moments of brilliance, the Hawks were able to finish
well and commence their season with a convincing 7-1 victory
over their opponents.
The scoring started early in the fifth minute with center back
John Stephens knocking in a header off Justin Bodiya's corner kick.
Newcomer Will Phouminh was able to score in the 25th minute when
center mid Alan Golden was able to slot a through ball that was
banged home with style. In the 35th minute, Alex Brown scored the
goal of the day off a nice individual play in the box by newcomer
Todd Leber laying off a nice back pass for a one time blast to
the near post upper 90 from 15 yards. Halftime score 3-0 Hawks.
The second half started and
Village put on some offensive pressure, earning a questionable
penalty kick in the 55th minute, which was
converted with ease. The Hawks struck again shortly thereafter
when Todd Leber was able to bang home a point blank shot off
the Alan Golden assist after a hectic flurry in the Village box.
Just
minutes later, the Hawks notched their fifth goal when Todd Leber's
corner kick found flanker Justin Bodiya running on to a well
struck one time volley. The sixth goal came in the 75th minute
when Todd
Leber found the ball in the box after a Mike Williams blast and
was able to bang home his 8th point of the match with ease. The
last goal was a clinical finish by Geof Thompson who danced and
weaved his way around four defenders in the opponents box and
finished off the fine technical display with a powerful blast
to the far
side netting.
All in all, it was the Hawks
day for finishing. In fairness to Village, they had a considerable
amount of possession and missed
many opportunities to finish, but it appeared that the Hawks' youth
and depth was the clear difference maker between the two sides.
Well won and great way to start the season. The Hawks next opponent
is the World Bank Soccer Club, back in the WPL after a one season
stint in the WISL First division. The Hawks will be looking to
gain momentum and notch their second victory of the season.
