2005: QuarterFinal MDCVSA State Cup: Hawks 5 – VA United - 0
In a quarterfinal matchup for the Virginia
State Cup, the Hawks faced off against 1st Place NVSL side,
VA United in a night game under the lights at Old Redskin Park.
The Aegean side was eager to redeem the outcome of it's previous
two outings in WPL action, both losses. With MLS referees and
state officials watching, an Aegean Hawks team with no subs
took it to their opponents in fine fashion to produce a convincing
5-0 victory.
The match marked the debut of Hawks new center midfielder, Mike
Goldman, who provided outstanding distribution, coverage, and physicality
to the core of the formation. To the game, the Hawks built threatening
attacks from the outset with a nice inside-outside game. Outside
defenders Jon Knight and Kevin Koitz made piercing runs into the
defense to garner free kicks and bang in crosses. The first goal
was scored at the five minute mark as Will Phouminh was able to
beat the United keeper to the ball and slide in the netter off
the Geoff Thompson pass. The Hawks scored again minutes later when
Geoff Thompson was able to convert a great Marcos Araus driven
ball from the left corner at the far post. Will Phouminh found
the net again at the 35 minute mark off a through ball from Alan
Golden and a nice move to shake his defender. Halftime score 3-0.
The second half began in the
same fashion as the previous 45 minutes. The Hawks put on a good
display of passing and possession soccer.
The United back line was constantly getting stretched out wide
and the crosses kept coming off nice buildups along the flanks,
good switching of the ball and complete control of the midfield.
The
Hawks increased the margin to 4-0 in the 57th minute off a nice
Geoff Thompson shot from the edge of the box that beat the keeper
easily. In the 70th minute, John Stephens muscled off four defenders
after a Hawks corner, slotting the leather past a hapless United
keeper for the final Hawks tally in the game and a 5 goal lead.
The final score could have been much worse considering the multiple
opportunities that went wide.
All in all, a great effort
by the fellas playing their second game in as many days. A special
thanks
to all those who made it: Pierre Fults, Jon Knight, John Stephens,
Kevin Koitz, Todd Leber, Mike Goldman, Alan Golden, Craig Cochran,
Geoff Thompson and Will Phouminh. A much needed victory that
provides confidence heading into next week's WPL matchup with
Reds United.
Hopefully, enough of the squad will show and the Hawks can play
to their form. The next stop in the quest for the State Cup is
Richmond on Saturday,June 11th. The Hawks will face off in the
semi-final vs. Richmond powerhouse, Lions FC in a heavily anticipated
matchup.
