2005: Hawks - 4, Village Settlements - 1
The first game of the Spring
2006 season saw the Hawks in an early morning matchup vs. Village
Settlements at Soccerplex field #23. With a solid winter of
playing together and the addition of several good players, the
Hawks looked to start their season campaign off on a good foot.
The squad was able to overcome the absence of several key players
to pull out a gritty 4-1 result against a solid Village Settlements
team.
In the opening 10 minutes of the game, Village applied most of
the pressure, but the Hawks were able to capitalize first off a
nice sequence of passing from the defense to the middle of the
pitch. A nice dummy by Yuri Sudhakar found Andy Zayas streaking
at the edge of the box to provide the service which was smashed
home by forward Watson Vaughan-Prather. The Hawks were able to
push the score to 2-0 in the 15th when Marcos Araus was able to
flick his header off a free kick onto the feet of Andy Zayas who
beat the keeper easily with a shot to the corner. The rest of the
first half saw Village applying pressure, but the score stood until
halftime.
The second half saw the Hawks come out flat and Village was able
to continue their pressure. The Hawks, however, were able to create
more chances than Village off the counter but the score stood until
the 70th minute when Village was able to capitalize on a defensive
mixup and slot home a goal for a 2-1 scoreline. Again, Village
pressured hard after the goal, but it was the Hawks that found
the net again in the 75th minute when outside back Titou Fierro
was able to penetrate on the overlap and tip toe up the opponents'
goal line to smash a nice right-footed blast in the left upper
90. The Hawks finished well again and sealed the win in the 85th
when striker Geoff Thompson was able to ditch a defender and blast
a shot from 15 yards to the right upper netting.
A nice 4-1 victory
to start the season and congrats go all around to the 12 players
who made it out. The team will look to gain momentum in the WPL
when it faces Reds in a Monday night matchup at EC Lawrence on
4/17.
