April 6th, 2003 - USASA National Amateur Cup – Aegean Hawks 0 – Dynamos –
3
The Hawks ended their National Amateur Cup
campaign on Sunday with a humiliating loss to Dynamos F.C. in a game
also counting towards the Premier league standings. The Hawks
showed the rust of not playing together since their previous
National Cup game vs. Virginia United in November.
The inopportune absence of a keeper in the lineup
for Sunday’s game left goalkeeping duties in the hands of defender
Andy Baldwin. Several key players were missing from the side
as well. While keepers Nick LaPorta and Kofi Boxill could most
likely have saved two of the Dynamos goals, the team’s performance
on the pitch left much to be desired. A squad of accomplished
collegiate and former professional players showed little form and a
reluctance to play the easy ball. The Hawks repeatedly tried
to force plays forward and the passing game was way off the mark.
“This has to go down as the all-time worst performance of any
Aegean Hawks team I have been associated with.” said long-time
Hawks defender Jon Knight. “This was a wake-up call that
hopefully will serve as the turning point for our season. I
take solace in the fact that the team on the field was the same that
last season ended the regular season with only two losses and the
league’s second-ranked defense. This was just rust – the
ability and talent is clearly there.”
To make matters worst, the team lost star forward
Craig Cochran to an ACL tear for the remainder of the season.
Craig joins forward Leonardo Nunes (ACL tear) and midfielder Pieter
Ockers (elbow surgery) on the injured list.
The team takes to the field on Sunday April 13th
vs. last season’s league title holder AC Hellas, whom the Hawks defeated
3-0 in dominating fashion in the previous campaign. With several
key players returning to the lineup, the Hawks will look to rectify
the atrocity of last week’s performance. News/Match
